Mini-cricketers show what they are made of

Six primary schools from around Vosloorus gathered at the Vosloorus Stadium to partake in the KFC Mini-Cricket Festival selection games for u-10 players who are going to represent the Vosloorus Cricket Club (VCC) in the Eastern Cricket League.

The schools started with practice matches on July 25, followed by a first competitive match between Nageng Primary School and Abinala Primary School on August 2.

The games will continue until August 31, a few days before the start of the Eastern Cricket League.

Both teams played well against each other in this eight-over game that was won by Abinala Primary School with 78/3 after eight overs.

Nageng Primary School only managed to put 65/5 on the board after eight overs.

Isaac Phele Vosloorus Cricket Club mini-cricket coach said this is one of the initiatives by KFC held with an aim of improving cricket clubs in the townships.

“Most of our current mini-cricket players are graduating to the senior teams. We still need players who are going to fill the gap that remains when the current players graduate,” said Phele.

“They are going to use these games to introduce hardball to the mini-cricket players and also to give every young child from the township an opportunity to play cricket.”

He concluded by saying that VCC would like to have players ready to compete against the best players before the league reopens at the beginning of September.

The schools that took part in the selection games are Zimele Primary School, Thabang Primary School, Abinala Primary School, Bopang-Kgotso Primary School, Fortune Kunene Primary School and Nageng Primary School.
