Leondale victors at Real Diski Soccer Challenge

The Real Diski Soccer Challenge soccer tournament was held at Leondale Sports Ground recently.

The two-day event for u-13, u-15 and u-17 teams from the Kathorus area started on Saturday, March 24, and finished on Sunday.

Jonnes Ntshweni, who is the Leondale United Sports Acadamy manager, said the tournament was a success.

“I agree that things did not go smoothly since we hosted the tournament for the first time after many years. We had ups and downs. But our overall rating of the tournament, I can say it was average. We expected more teams than those who pitched and time management was an issue, especially because the u-17 game was played when it was very dark on Sunday,” said Ntshweni.

Ntshweni said this is going to be an annual tournament.

He said the purpose was to scout talent as they want to join the league.

“We wanted to see teams that were going to challenge us. As a result, we will join the same league as those teams so that we will grow,” said Ntshweni.

He added that in future they want to have a squad of players from Leondale that are going to compete with other teams from all over the country.

In the u-13 category, Supreme FC from Rondebult defeated Gardens FC 5-4 on penalties.

The u-15 category was won by Leondale United Sports Academy by defeating Leondale All Stars 4-3 in on penalties.

The winners of u-17 category were Leondale United Sports Academy. They came back from behind twice and held their opponents Boksburg Academy in the finals 2-2.

When it was time for penalty shoot-out Boksburg Academy refused to take part because it was too dark. As a result, the academy from Leondale were crowned the tournament winners in the u-17 category.

The first prize finish winners won jerseys, 20 gold medals and a trophy, while runners-up from all the categories got 10 sets of vests, 20 silver medals and a runner-up trophy.
