Cricket festival proves to be a huge success

Benoni Northerns Cricket Club invited cricket teams from around Ekurhuleni to the Benoni Northerns Cricket Club u-10 Cricket Festival on March 3.

Duduza, Vosloorus, Tembisa, Daveyton, Kempton Park, Avion and the Benoni Cricket Club itself were among the teams who took part in the festival.

Isaac Phele from the Vosloorus Cricket Club said he saw an opportunity to develop the coaches.

“Vosloorus Cricket Club is growing very fast; we have more than seven teams now. There is a lot of work for me to do as a development coach, so I decided to give young talented coaches from the township an oportunity to show off their talents. At the same time it will empower young black cricketers,” said Phele.

He added that the coaches – Nqoba Mbuyisa for the u-8 team, Katleho Phoshomane for the u-10 team and Teboho Molepi for the u-12 team did a good job during the event.

“Even though the event was not about the results but more about unity in cricket, I still think our u-10 team did well under their supervision,” said Phele.

Phele went on to add that the young coaches are doing a good job in his absence.

“There are times when I leave them to coach the teams in my absence. If I come back the following day to do some polishing on a good job they had done in my absence, I always find the team in good shape,” said Phele.

He concluded by saying that what he likes the most about the young coaches is that the aspect of the game whereby they have to involve the captains, has improved tremendously.
