Children walk against obesity

Children from primary schools around the Kathorus area took part in the walk against obesity that was held in Katlehong recently.

The walk started at 7am at Katlehong Art Centre and ended at Huntersfield Sport Complex.

More than 470 learners from five schools – the Phumela, Matsediso, Keketso, Ntuthuko and Intokozo primary schools – took part in the event.

Children aged between seven and 10 enjoyed spending time outdoors in the cool weather while taking steps to raise awareness of the problems surrounding obesity.

The event was organised by ProExcel to address the issue of obesity by encouraging children from Katlehong, Thokoza and Vosloorus to lead a healthy lifestyle through physical activity.

“We are doing this because we want to encourage young adults to exercise, as we believe that a healthy mind in a healthy body produces excellent results,” said Mpho Tolo, chairperson of ProExcel.

Project director Sharon Tolo said obesity is a disturbing factor in our country.

“Preventive measures need to be practiced and maintained from grassroots level,” she said.

“This project was initiated in pursuit of getting South Africa to be an active and winning nation, in accordance with the vision and mission of Sports and Recreation South Africa.”

Buses ferried participants from their respective schools to the starting point of the walk, and delivered them back to their schools afterwards.

It was a first-time experience for most of the kids, and Mpho was excited to see them enjoying themselves on the day.

“This is a unique event. The first time it ever happens here in Kathorus area,” she said.

Sharon and Mpho worked together to coordinate and deliver the event. They also accompanied the children during the walk.

“We are proud to say the fun walk was a success and we are looking forward to the next one,” Sharon said, adding: “This will be an annual event with more related events to follow.”
