Ekurhuleni to host Aids Day half-marathon

Soul City will host the 10km and 21km World Aids Day Half-Marathon at Katlehong’s Hunstersfield Stadium on Sunday, December 3.

Katlehong Athletics Club (KAC) chairman Hloni Motloung said KAC as home club will be running a local bus (running in a group) on the day.

“The purpose of the bus is to run together and cheer each other up,” Motloung said. “By so doing we will be making runners have fun and enjoy the run – especially the novices.”

He said they don’t want novices to battle to complete the run, but to finish comfortably.

Motloung said the bus will be running with bags of sweets for handing over to the crowd cheering on the runners, thereby adding to the atmosphere.

“The runners who are going to form part of the bus are the professional runners, but they will be running in the slow pace. The 21km will be finished within three hours while 10km runners will be expected to complete the run within one and a half hours.”

Some KAC runners will not participate in the run as they have been assigned to work hand-in-hand with the traffic police to marshal the streets and ensure the safety of the runners.

Motloung warned motorists that they will experience traffic disruptions on the day.

“The disruption of traffic will be experienced during the duration of the run – between 7am and 10am. I would like to plead with the motorists to consider the safety of the runners.”

He concluded by urging Katlehong residents to come out in numbers, “whistling, ululating, putting loud their music, bringing water buckets to give visiting runners a Katlehong hospitality.”
