Karate gains popularity

African Full Contact Karate Organisation (AFCKO) in partnership with Enshin Karate organised a Juniors and Kata tournament at Zonkizizwe Community Hall on October 14.

More than 130 junior karate students from Enshin Karate, Kyokushinkan Karate, International Kyokushinkai Karate Federation attended the tournament.

Enshin clubs from Hammaskraal, New Castle, Katlehong, Thokoza, Vosloorus, Daveyton, Tembisa, Soweto, Heidleburg, Duduza and Tsakane attended from different provinces.

Shihan Thulane Sibisi said the purpose of the event was to develop full-contact karatekas from a young age.

“We also like to encourage mass participation from the youth in our respective townships so that the sport will not vanish,” said shihan Sibisi.

He said he would be happy if this township contributed to the growth of karate in this country.

“This country is regarded as a sporting nation, so we as karatekas are excited to be among the sports that contribute to that,” said shihan Sibisi.

Shihan German Visser and shihan Collen Sedoaba grace the event with their presence.

Shihan Sibisi thanked the community of Zonkizizwe for the support.

“I would also like to thank all karate instructors who supported us with officiating,” said shihan Sibisi.

He said their next event will be Afcko Karate Awards 2017 on December 14.

The results during the Kata tournament for seniors were as follows:

* Sempai Marco Snyders from Ferkkandos got Position One.

*Sempai Katleho Thubela from Katlehong got Position Two.

*While sempai Ditebogo Motshabi from Hammaskraal got Position Three.

All participants received a participation certificate in kumite/fighting and medals for their Kata achievements.
