Wits crowned Gauteng Champion of Champions

Bidvest Wits were crowned the 2017 Gauteng Champion of Champions at Vosloorus Stadium on October 7.

The third instalment of the tournament was played under rainy conditions.

The defending champions, Supersport United, failed to hold on to their trophy.

Three teams from Gauteng, including Bidvest Wits, Supersport United and Jomo Cosmos (the host team) took part in the tournament.

Results for each game were decided after 45 minutes.

Jomo Cosmos and Supersport United locked horns in the first game, which ended in a 0-0 draw. The game went to dribble-out stages to decide the winner.

During the dribble-out, one player from each team was supposed to dribble the ball from outside the box and beat the opposition keeper within 10 seconds.

Jomo Cosmos beat Supersport United’s keeper twice, while Supersport only managed to beat Jomo Cosmos once.

The scoreline after the dribble-out stages was 2-1 in favour of the hosts. As a result Jomo Cosmos earned two points by defeating Supersport United in that game.

In the second match, Supersport United played against Bidvest Wits. Bidvest Wits won 1-0.

In the last game, Bidvest Wits played against Jomo Cosmos and defeated them 2-0.

Jomo Cosmos had a good game plan, managing to get a couple of one-on-one scoring opportunities against Bidvest Wits’ keeper, but they failed to convert them into goals.

Jomo Cosmos player Linda Mtambo told Kathorus MAIL that they should have ‘killed’ the game in its early stages.

“There were times where we had one-on-one scoring chances with our opponents’ keeper but failed to capitalise on those chances. They only got two chances and punished us,” said Mtambo.

He said the results were not a true reflection of the game.

Mtambo thanked the community of Vosloorus for coming in their numbers to give them support despite the rainy weather.

“I would like to apologise to them for letting them down … We promise to do better in our next game,” said Mtambo.

Speaking after the tournament, the Gauteng provincial government director of competitive sports, Philasande Muvevi, applauded the great support shown by the people of Vosloorus as well as the quality of football displayed by the three clubs.

“This was yet again another spectacular afternoon of football entertainment for the community of Vosloorus and surrounding areas. As the home of champions, Gauteng takes pride in putting together such events that bring social cohesion and stimulate economic growth to our communities. Well done to the new champions and thank you to all teams, supporters and all key stakeholders for making the 2017 edition of the Gauteng Champion of Champions one to remember,” Muvevi said.
