Eden Park resident wins 2018 SA Men of the Year award

Themba Gudlhuza from Eden Park, the 2018 SA Men of the Year award winner in the sports category, hosted an event for the community at his house on Saturday, December 1.

The SA Men of the Year Awards aim to recognise men who are positive role models and are making a difference in their communities.

This year the awards ceremony took place at Carnival City on November 29.

Gudlhuza, the chairman of his own team, Gudlhuza Football Club, said he was recognised for his outstanding work in grooming children from his own community.

“I took them off the street and taught them how to play soccer. What I did was not only for my team, Gudlhuza FC, but also for other teams in my local community,” said Gudlhuza.

He added that Gudlhuza FC is doing well in the local football league.

“My team is divided into different categories, u-11, u-13, u-15 and u-17. They have done well and won numerous trophies, despite having very few resources.”

Gudlhuza competed against the likes of Steve Khomphela (former Kaizer Chiefs coach), Joel Masutha (former Black Leopards coach), James Mothiba (former Orlando Pirates player) and Bongani Mnguni, who is also doing community development work in his own community.

“I am very proud of the faith that my community showed in me by voting for me. I am very humbled and I promise to continue to do good things for them. It is at times like this when you get the courage to continue to do good for your community,” said Gudlhuza.

Community member Khanya Bhembe said Gudlhuza deserved to win.

“People voted for him because he has been doing good things for them. Gudlhuza is doing wonders in empowering our youth,” said Bhembe.

Bongani Ngomane, one of the organisers of the 2018 Men of the Year Awards, was present to officially hand over the award to Gidlhuza in front of the community members.

“I was so excited that Gudlhuza won the award. I am very humbled to present him with the award right here in front of you. All that he has done to win this award he did without expecting to be paid. I hope everyone here will see that if you do something good for the community, you get good rewards,” Ngomane.
