Water systems are recovering well in Ekurhuleni

The city calls on residents to still use water sparingly as the system recovers after maintenance.

MMC for Water and Sanitation Thembi Msane urged residents to use water sparingly as the system is recovering following the Rand Water maintenance programme.

Msane was speaking during her monitoring visits to Etwatwa, Clayville, and Thembisa reservoirs on August 6.

She said most parts of the city operate normally but the high-laying areas are still struggling.

“We have chief engineers closely monitoring our systems across the city. The high-lying areas like Etwatwa, Duduza, and Kwa-Thema will be the ones that will fully recover last. But with the low-lying areas back to normal, we can have more trucks ready to supply the high-lying areas. If all goes well, the system will return to normal in two weeks,” she said.

The visited reservoirs were 50 to 80% filled.

Msane said that the construction of a water tower and pump station at the Thembisa reservoirs will help with supplying water to high-lying areas.

“When this is complete we will be able to push water from the reservoir to the tower with enough gravity to supply the high-lying areas which normally suffer when there is maintenance, they recover last. With this infrastructure there will be enough water and enough pressure to supply all our areas,” she said.

Msane urged residents to still use water sparingly.

“We call on our residents to report any water leaks outside properties and fix those that are inside properties as this is one of the main sources of water losses. The situation we in calls for us to save every drop of water we have,” Msane said.
