Vosloorus NPO to host theatre show
Mahlaba said one of their dancers was offered the chance to dance in Las Vegas.
The Vosloorus NPO, Phinda-Mzala Entertainment Project (PMEP), has partnered with Assupol, the National Lottery Commission and Skye Distribution to host the Construction Project Theatre Show at the Joburg Theatre’s Lesedi Theatre on March 18 between 16:00 and 17:00.
Theatre fans can expect performances from the Ubumbano Cultural group and the Underground Movers of pantsula, Tswana and Zulu traditional dances and contemporary dance.
The PMEP was founded in November 2011 by former dancer David Mahlaba from Nhlapho section, Katlehong. He formed the NPO after seeing the youth imprisoned by drugs and alcohol in the informal settlement.
The PMEP is an arts and culture project that deals with the performing arts. They conduct performing classes at Wits University for students who are studying the performing arts and help develop other youth organisations in the Ekurhuleni region.
Mahlaba said one of their dancers was offered an opportunity to dance in Las Vegas. They currently have ten dancers aged between 26 and 34.
He said, as a former dancer, it brings him joy to see the show the group has put together.
“Seeing them onstage reassures me that this is worth all the effort we put in daily,” he said.

Future plans
Mahlaba wants to open an academy to teach pantsula dance and hopes it will attract tourists to the informal settlement and the greater Ekurhuleni region.
