Meet Sensei Thulani Sibisi from Katlehong

Karate also teaches young stars to be disciplined and avoid unnecessary conflicts.

Sensei Thulani Sibisi is the founder of African Full Contact Karate Organisation (AFCKO).

He is a team player in his community and as a karate coach, he trains both junior and senior divisions.

They compete in local and international tournaments every year. This helps to keep children in the community away from bad influences that could lead to substance and drug abuse.

Given the scourge of gender-based violence across South Africa, Sibisi decided to introduce self-defence classes to prepare the youth for situations that may require them to protect themselves against perpetrators.

Karate also teaches youngsters to be disciplined and avoid unnecessary conflicts.

Q: What do you love about your township, what sets it apart from other townships?

Kathorus is a very beautiful township with very rich historical places like Thokoza Monument at Khumalo Street and Katlehong Art Center at Phooko Section where tourists visit the centre to witness history.

Q: What is your favourite family location in your township?

My favourite location is the Thokoza Swimming Pool. It is a nice outing space for families; children can swim while adults relax under the shade.

I also like Spruitview where there is an open space for everyone to enjoy outdoor activities like game boards and soccer.

Q: What is your favourite eating spot?

Makukule Kitchen and Ankers Restaurant are my favourite eating spots. After a long day I take my family to one of the two spots for dinner, and they provide the best service with friendly smiles.

Q: What changes would you like to see in your township?

I would like to see the community taking ownership of local infrastructure and protecting what we have in our township. It is all in our hands to support local development by protecting our schools, roads, public parks, clinics and sports fields.
