Retired teachers plough back to learners

Former TTTC students collectively contributed R15 760 independently without any sponsors.

Former Transvaal Teachers Training College (TTTC) students reconnected with learners in various schools in the Ekurhuleni district to hand over a generous donation of school shoes for the needy.

At least 294 schools benefited from the initiative, including three schools from Kathorus, namely Mthimkhulu Primary School in Vosloorus, Chivbirikane Primary School in Katlehong and Tshwaragano Primary School in Thokoza, on February 16.

Tshwaragano Primary School welcomed the donations of school shoes.

The initiative is piloted by the pioneer group that started TTTC in 1979, following their reunion over 40 years ago after they had graduated as qualified educational practitioners.

One of their resolutions was for each of them to contribute toward raising funds to purchase school shoes of varying sizes and donate them to schools across the provinces without discriminating.

For practical consideration, the group established regional cohorts to identify schools with needy learners to ensure they benefit from the initiative.

Mthimkhulu Primary School learners received school shoes in Vosloorus.

The Kathorus cohort is led by Lizzie Mokholela and supported by Dikeledi Kopedi and Clive Mtshisa. The trio visited schools across Kathorus to distribute the donations.

Kopedi said as retired teachers, they know the struggles faced by learners. As a result, they collectively contributed R15 760 independently and without any sponsors.

“We felt we should plough back to the needy and disadvantaged communities. Ten percent of us are still in contact with learners, hence we understand the challenges of learners who walk to school without proper school uniforms.”
