Two suspects killed during a shootout with police

A revolver was recovered from one of the suspects and a toy gun was inside the Isuzu bakkie.

Two men were shot and killed while a third man fled on foot during a shootout with Eden Park SAPS police at around 02:45 on December 15 at Namhlanje Street, Palm Ridge Section, Katlehong.

According to the Ekurhuleni district communication officer Captain Neldah Sekgobela, two police constables from Eden Park SAPS were patrolling the area when they spotted two suspicious vehicles travelling at high speed along Namhlanje Street, approaching Songtonga Road.

Sekgobela said the officers, travelling along Songtonga Road, attempted to stop the vehicles, a grey Nissan Almera and a white Isuzu bakkie with three occupants.

“The occupants in the bakkie started shooting at the police who were travelling in a Toyota Hilux marked with blue lights. The police vehicle got two bullet holes on the left front bumper,” said Sekgobela.

“The police retaliated and fired back. The suspects lost control of the bakkie while shooting at the police in their attempt to flee.”

Sekgobela confirmed that two suspects were certified dead on the scene, while their accomplice fled on foot.

“A revolver was recovered from one of the suspects and a toy gun was found inside the Isuzu bakkie. The police also discovered the ignition of the bakkie was tampered with.”
