Have fun with your child making a pinecone snow globe

Help your child make this festive and fun pinecone snow globe for under your Christmas tree or as a gift for grandparents.

Pinecones are one of nature’s best crafting tools. Before we started crafting with pine cones, we had no idea how many pretty, adorable, clever, fantastic, useful, and creative things you can make with pinecones. Depending on where you live, you could have a plethora of pinecones in your garden you can use for different craft activities kids will love.

Today, we’re going to show you how to make a waterless snow globe using a pinecone.

What you’ll need

  • Clean jars (we used baby Purity jars)
  • A pinecone
  • Hot glue gun
  • Cork tiles
  • Glitter
  • White pom poms
  • White craft glue
  • A string of gold or silver beads (optional)
  • Twine
  • Spray paint (optional if you want your pinecone sprayed silver or gold before making your snow globe)

How to make it

  1. First, check to see if you need to add a layer or two of cork tile to raise your pinecone slightly depending on the depth of your jar lids and the size of your pine cone. To ensure that the lid closes properly, cut the cork slightly smaller than the top of the jar.
  2. With the cork attached to the inside of the jar lid, use a hot glue gun to attach your pinecone. Remember, working with a glue gun is best left to adults.
  3. After the glue has dried, begin covering the cork with fake snow. White craft pom poms cut into pieces work well for this.
  4. Cover the cork with craft glue and carefully stick the cut-up pom poms.
  5. Now comes the part that kids love but parents hate: adding glitter! Ensure all the glue has dried before proceeding with this step; otherwise, the glitter will stick to it.
  6. The amount of glitter you use is determined by how thick your child wants the glitter to be at the bottom of the jar.
  7. Screw the lid on tightly with the glitter at the bottom of the jar.
  8. Wrap the twine around the jar, just above the lid, and tie it in a bow.
