PCO to engage government on decaying sports facilities

The sporting community wants the government to assist with sports facilities, develop the current sports grounds and tennis courts and revive the arts centre.

The parliamentary constituency office (PCO) will engage with the government before the end of September to address concerns about inadequate sports facilities around Kathorus.

Member of Parliament Phutas Tseki acknowledged that sports facilities in the township have degraded. He was responding to questions at the PCO Paul Setlou Zone branch on August 16.

He said they will invite the minister of sport, Nathi Mthethwa, along with the province and the municipality. This is after PCO met with the art centre, and cultural and sports people and raised several concerns.

“The associations we met include Getto Association, which covers various sport codes from Vosloorus, weight lifting club in Thokoza and athletics in Zonkezizwe. They want the government to assist with sports facilities and develop the current sports ground and tennis courts and revive the arts centre,” he continued.

“We will send a letter to the minister. We are compiling a list of issues that affect the people. One issue is the sports facilities,” said Tseki.

He said most of the sports facilities either belong to a school or the municipality but they want all spheres of government to work together to address the sports facilities’ concerns.

“The municipality, provincial and national government must work together and come to the township to conduct an assessment on the sports facilities and decide on what kind of intervention they could make.

“Some of these things do not happen because we are not raising them or when they are raised it is only from the communities’ side as there is no support. The PCO means to listen to those cries,” he noted.
