Programme launched to transform spaza shops into convenience retail stores

Funds will assist to transform spaza shops into convenience retail stores, based in the townships.

Scores of entrepreneurs gathered to get first-hand information on the township retail cluster programme launched at Sam Ntuli Stadium in Thokoza on August 8.

The entrepreneurs were pleased to learn of the opportunities the programme brings.

The MMC for Finance and Economic Development, Fanyana Nkosi, expressed his gratitude to the Gauteng government for spearheading the development of the township economy.

“Today’s event is an example of how the partnership between local and provincial governments can generate public value.

“Local businesses will now move from being a synonym for carwashes and barbecue outlets to being potential mega job creators,” the MMC said.

During the launch, Gauteng Premier David Makhura announced that R100m has been set aside to fund businesses in the townships.

The fund will assist to transform spaza shops into convenience retail stores based in the townships.

Whilst the premier stated the importance of residents supporting businesses where they reside, he encouraged local entrepreneurs to be organised into business forums or associations to benefit from the funding available for the boosting of the township economy.

Businesses operating in Ekurhuleni are further encouraged to visit the city’s website at www.ekurhuleni.gov.za to apply for both trading permits and business licences.
