Complainant arrested after failing to appear in court

She was arrested among five other suspects who have been arrested for various offences.

A 33-year-old woman, who is the complainant in an assault case, has been arrested after failing to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court.

According to Katlehong South SAPS communications officer Capt Mega Ndobe, the 33-year-old reported a case of assault against a 29-year-old on December 4 after she was assaulted while both women were drinking in a tavern.

Ndobe said the 29-year-old woman was immediately arrested after the case was registered.

“During court proceedings, the complainant was summoned to court on April 8 but failed to appear,” he said.

“It is a procedure for the court to issue a warrant of arrest when a person summoned to appear in court fails to do so,” said Ndobe.

He urged the public to follow the court rules.

The 33-year-old was arrested by the Katlehong Crime Prevention and the detectives during their normal stop-and-search routine on April 12.

She was arrested among five other suspects who have been arrested for various offences.

Katlehong SAPS station commander Brig Albertina Vesi applauded the job well done by the members who contributed to the arrests.

She encouraged the community to continue being the eyes and ears of the police to avoid taking the law into their own hands and to report any form of gender violence.

All arrested suspects are expected to appear in Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Courts on different charges.
