Matric teachers awarded for excellent results

As Grade 12 teachers received the awards, they have to also acknowledge the teachers in the foundation, intermediate and senior phases.

The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) Katlehong North branch rewarded schools and teachers who produced outstanding matric results during the award ceremony held at Ntuthuko Primary School at Twala Section, Katlehong, on February 24.

At least 11 schools received their accolades for the results received. The difficult conditions brought by the Covid-19 pandemic did not stop the Class of 2021 from raising the bar and thus received certificates of excellence and trophies.

The recipients included Mpiliweni Secondary School with 96.8%, followed by Buhle Park Secondary School with 94.7%, Dinwiddie High School with 94.25%, Germiston High School with 94%, Alafang Secondary School with 91.9%, Katlehong School of Engineering with 90.2%.

Fumani Secondary School teachers received accolades for their matric results during the matric excellence awards at Ntuthuko Primary School at Twala Section, Katlehong, on February 24.

Luthukutula Secondary School had 89.3%, Graceland Education Centre 81.3% and Fumana Secondary School 72.7%.

Teachers who got 100% in their various subjects were also celebrated.

The deputy chairperson of SADTU Katlehong North branch, Jafta Moetapele, said they realised that their members were slowly losing hope in their purpose because they received little.

“As a branch, we need to find what we can do to uplift their spirit, to motivate them and show them that we recognise their hard work, effort and sleepless nights,” said Moetapele.

He said as Grade 12 teachers received the awards, they have to also acknowledge the teachers in the foundation, intermediate and senior phases.

“It may seem like we are giving these awards to Grade 12 educators but as a union, we are committing ourselves to go back to the foundation and senior phases and treat teachers similarly because the final product would not be there without the intermediate product,” said Moetapele.

The chairperson of SADTU Katlehong North branch, Khaya Sinqaba, pointed out some of the challenges they encountered and applauded the teachers for the hard work they have done without sufficient resources.

“You do not have sufficient resources compared to the Model C schools, but look at the achievement. I can tell you that you are carrying Ekurhuleni North because, without you, they wouldn’t have the results they have today,” Sinqaba addressed teachers.

“I recall very well when we were told that there were those who were going to evening classes. You can imagine leaving your family behind from 20:00 to 06:00 to teach learners,” he said.

Sinqaba listed Covid-19 and load-shedding as some challenges that made it difficult for teachers to work.

He said he was surprised when he saw the matric results as it was not what he expected. He praised teachers who went the extra mile to make this happen.

He urged teachers to keep the standard high and maintain their results.
