Advocate calls for seven to be charged with perjury

Zamokuhle Mbatha, the former Rastafarian who was the first suspect to be arrested by the police for the murder of Senzo Meyiwa in 2014, has welcomed the views expressed by Advocate Maselela Teffo.

Teffo said that all the people who were present inside the house on the day Meyiwa was shot and killed in October 2014 must be arrested and charged with defeating the ends of justice.

“I think they are all guilty of misleading the investigation when they all stuck to the false claims that Senzo died during a botched robbery attempt that led to me being pointed out as one of the robbers who shot and killed Senzo,” argued Mbatha.

Teffo’s startling revelation about the real reasons behind the delay in the arrest of the known killer in the seven-year-old Senzo Meyiwa murder case and why the investigation in the case have dragged on for so long brings to light the prevailing common perceptions of “collusion” and a “cover-up” by what he describes as a faction led by an “unqualified” senior police official.

He is the new legal representative appointed by the Meyiwa family to secure justice.
In the television interview, Teffo claims he has met with obstacles to “terminate his mandate” to pursue the controversial murder case.

Teffo further mentions the names of the high-ranking members of the SAPS hierarchy he claims have tried to frustrate his rights as a lawyer to legally assist the Meyiwa family.

During the interview, Teffo indicated that he was even threatened with arrest if he still went ahead with his plans to independently continue to investigate the murder. Himself a former SAPS crime detective, Teffo claimed he had worked his way up through the ranks when he decided to study law.

He was approached by Sifiso Meyiwa, the brother of the slain national goalkeeper., to look into the matter. Teffo then combined his detective investigative skills with his acquired legal knowledge to dig deeper into the case.

Teffo said he consulted extensively and spoke to many different people, including the police. Teffo claimed to have gathered enough evidence on the Senzo killing in an effort to get a clear picture of what happened inside the Khumalo family home.

He has become the first independent investigator to claim that two shots were fired from the same gun inside the family home.

Teffo painted a rowdy and chaotic scene inside the house after one of the people arrived at the house and started making demands and this led to a commotion. This person, who was also armed, then pulled out a firearm and pointed it on the floor before pulling the trigger and a shot went off.

However, Teffo says the shooter was immediately overpowered and disarmed.

The advocate claimed that the second bullet was fired from the same firearm by a different person. The bullet grazed the deceased’s chest and led to his death.

According to Teffo, the seven people who were in the house must be arrested and brought to court.

“They must explain to the court what they saw happen when Senzo was shot.”

He also hints at a possible case of perjury against the seven people.

Teffo is baffled at how there can be two conflicting theories presented by seemingly rival investigating teams.

“It cannot be that in the same scenario there are two investigating groups and each follows a different theory about what happened. I am calling for one of these theories to be abandoned and the theory that presents a more logical one, namely that no one from the outside entered the house that night, be kept.”

Teffo said that all the five men paraded to the media as suspects in the murder are now his clients. He said the five have dismissed the murder allegations levelled against them and have now approached him to defend them.

Adding fuel to the fire, Sifiso has also publicly rejected the allegations against the five for the death of his slain brother.

Sifiso openly lambasted the appearance of five in court in October last year and described it as a “farce” and a “diversion” from the trail of the real culprits.

“As a family, we know the truth about what happened inside that house on the night Senzo was shot,” said Sifiso.
