Five suspects arrested over the long weekend

The suspects were arrested for various crimes, such as possession of an unlicensed firearm, assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm related to domestic violence and theft.

Zonkizizwe police arrested five suspects in different areas around Zonkizizwe on March 19 and 20.

The suspects were arrested for various crimes, such as possession of an unlicensed firearm, assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm related to domestic violence and theft.

The communications officer of Zonkizizwe SAPS, Sgt Rufus Tema, said police were performing patrol duties at around 8pm in Zone Four when they spotted a suspicious-looking white Avanza parked in the street with four occupants.

Tema said the occupants became restless when police stopped behind their vehicle to inspect.

The four officials realised one of the occupants had a protruding object on his waist. The officers ordered him to stand still as they began to search him, he added.

“Police found he was carrying a firearm, which he failed to produce a licence to possess. He was immediately arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm,” said Tema.

The seized firearm will be taken to forensic examination to determine if it was involved in any other crime.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon.
