Preparing a child for schooling in the time of Covid-19

“It’s important to allow your child to be independent because that will allow them to learn how to cope and deal with normal everyday stress," said Mbuli.

A joint webinar took place between the Department of Basic Education and the Republic of Namibia on January 27 to debate schooling in the time of Covid-19.

Some of the challenges that were raised included the effects the pandemic has had on learners. Learners went back to school on February 15. Some may be affected by struggling to deal with anxiety, stress, or adjusting to the new norm.

GCN/NEWS spoke to clinical psychologist Mzamo Mbuli about how parents can support, adjust and prepare to ensure mental health wellness under the new normal.

Mbuli said everything a child does is a reflection of home. “Parents can prepare their children for school by talking to them about the changes at schools and advising them on how to adjust to these changes.

“Encourage them to continue washing their hands and stick to social distancing. If this is done at home, it will not be difficult for a child to continue with these safety measures at school.”

He said parents also need to be observant of their child to be able to see if the child is having some difficulties in school.

“Children don’t just change. If you know a child is always bubbly and suddenly changes, you need to find out what might be challenging your child.”

Communication

“Communication is important in order to be able to know what is happening in your child’s life. Talking about your day and the difficulties you face will give your child the freedom to share and talk about their challenges,” said Mbuli.

“Parents need to get involved in a child’s schooling life. The lockdown had some advantages as parents had to pay attention to their children because they were home.

“It’s important to allow your child to be independent because that will allow them to learn how to cope and deal with normal everyday stress,” said Mbuli.
