Motorist shoots Gauteng traffic police officer in Alberton

A Gauteng Traffic Police officer is stable and receiving medical attention in hospital after being shot by a motorist on October 16.

Law enforcement has expressed great concern following the shooting of one of its officers on the corner of Ring Road West and Voortrekker Street.

The officer, from the Special Patrol Unit, was reportedly shot twice by an unknown motorist driving a red Audi and sustained injuries in the process.

Sello Maremane, Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson, said this was after the motorist failed to stop at a red traffic light and the officer signalled for him to stop.

“The motorist decided to disobey a lawful instruction by speeding off and shooting the officer in the process. Motorists are supposed to abide by the law set by authorities. It is important the law must be respected at all times,” he said.

The Gauteng Traffic Police has condemned the incident and calls on all officers to be cautious while carrying out their duties.

“It is unfortunate that as we strive to create safer communities, criminals continue to undermine the rule of law and order. The Gauteng Traffic Police will not be deterred in enforcing the rules of the road and regulations. We also call on officers to exercise extreme caution when they are discharging their duties. This is also to ensure their safety on Gauteng roads,” said Maremane.

He also said officers will not rest until the perpetrator is brought to book. An investigation into an attempted murder case is ongoing.

Maremane also confirmed a case of attempted murder and reckless driving was opened with Alberton SAPS.
