Well-known boxing trainer and promotor Anton Gilmore from Box Office and his team took to the streets to launch a clean-up on Mandela Day, July 18.
It is no mean feat for him and his able workmen/boxers to have already done over 800 hours of clean-up since lockdown started at the end of March.
And in celebration of Nelson Mandela, which recognises a country that has changed into a democratic society, they continued to salvage litter from the southern suburbs’ streets.
Gilmore has a collection of beggars and street people who kept them busy during lockdown by identifying suburbs and, in particular streets, which need to be cleared of litter and rubbish.
Streets and areas his team cleaned included the South Rand Hospital, Verona Street, Comaro Avenue, Linmeyer Shops and all the places look much better.
He said he has changed how people live in the area and the spazza shop owners have also jumped on board offering a beggar a food parcel once a day to keep the area of the shops clean.
“We are doing this for ourselves and as the Marican president said, ‘Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country’. Grab a spade and a broom and get in with the movement to restore your community. In Genesis 1, God said we must manage his planet. This is us doing His work,” said Gilmore.
