Local farmer aims to empower the community through farming

Farmer passes his skills to others to make a living through farming.

Local residents are relying on their skills to survive these difficult times.

A local small-scale farmer, Billiam Musvaburi from Ivory Park, uses his skills for farming to make a living.

Born in Zimbabwe, Musvaburi says farming is in his blood since he grew up in a farming area and now he is passing down that skill to the youth.

“I’ve been farming here since 2012 with the skills I acquired from back home. There is no other skill except farming, this is all I know,” Musvaburi said.

He adds that the aim is to pass on his farming skills to those who need them.

“I teach all the practical skills you need. Once we can plant something, by the time it is ripe to sell you would already have seen all the process from start to the end, meaning you are empowered to do it on your own.

“My aim is that Ivory Park becomes a farming land, where people can sustain themselves by farming.”

Musvaburi also says that it is important for one to be eating greener food, which is rich in necessary minerals to build one’s immune system.

“This food comes straight from the soil and it’s organic. We use 100 per cent organic fertilisers to grow these veggies. We grow spinach and chomolia.

“A word of advice to anyone who has a space in their yards, please use it. Try to grow different plants and see which one favours your soil. Another important thing is that you should get to know people who have the skill of farming so you can learn a thing or two,” said Musvaburi.

He emphasises that team work is golden in the field of agriculture because the world depends on the skills each one acquires for food security.

“The new generation does not want to work, they rather ask for food instead of asking to be taught how to grow their own one day.

“We would like to take this to another level, maybe supply to big supermarkets one day.

“We can do a lot together.

“I am available to teach anyone for free at any time. Plus, you have something to eat at the end of the day, while selling your produce.”
