Human Rights Day event cancelled due to Covid-19 outbreak

Accountancy Community Through Tirisano (ACTT) has called off its Human Rights Day celebrations in light of the global Covid-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

The academy, which provides extra lessons to high school learners from the Kathorus area, was due to hold its celebrations on March 1 and provide entertainment for the community.

Enett Mokoena, the founder and director of the academy’s board, said the cancellation is in line with the government’s mandate that prevents public meetings of more than 100 people.

“We are honoring the call by President Cyril Ramaphosa. We do not want to put anyone’s life at risk as we were expecting an attendance of 400 people and above,” said Mokoena.

He said the community, learners and sponsors were disappointed because the celebrations were going to include debates, public speaking and activities related to human rights and the challenges affecting the youth. A 5km walk and soccer and netball tournaments were also planned for four secondary schools, namely Mpontsheng Secondary School, KwaDukathole Comprehensive School, Lethulwazi Secondary School and Vosloorus Comprehensive School.

African Bank, Absa and Avbob were the main sponsors and accepted the cancellation.

Mokoena said the event was postponed until further notice

“But we would like to host it on Freedom Day. If not we will host it on Youth Day on June 16. The event is definitely going to take place this year.”

Mokoena added, “When the coronavirus was first mentioned we never thought it would become as serious as it is now. It is going impact educational activities. As ACTT we stand tall to promote excellence in academy activities.”
