Lack of rain could ruin self-help project

A self-help agricultural project in Mapleton, which caters for young and old people with physical and mental disabilities, runs the risk of ruin if the continued lack of rain continues.

The Mohau Orphans and Disabled Home, run by Mohau Ntsoane, of Vosloorus, cares for about 43 children and adults in Mapleton.

“We survive on donations from the public and the community, as well as the small agricultural project we run on the premises. We sell the agricultural produce to the local community in the informal settlements of Holomisa, Wolfe and Villa Lisa, to generate an income for the centre,” explained Mohau, who has been running the home since 1995.

The ‘Home’, as the orphanage and old age home is popularly known, also runs a chicken-breeding project at the plot.

“We also sell the eggs to the local communities in order to supplement the project with much-needed funds to feed our staff of 10 assistants, who also earn a small stipend for the work they provide,” she explained.

The home is looking for volunteers from the community to help with the workload of caring for both the aged and the disabled minors. Social workers from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality visit the home on a regular basis to provide health care.

“Some of the people here need constant monitoring because of their ill heath and mental state and we would gladly appreciate any type of assistance from both the local community and the corporate businesses in the area of Boksburg, Germiston and Alberton,” added Mohau.
