The metro is set to roll-out an array of activities to mark the annual OR Tambo Month commemorations.
This year’s activities will include the highlights of the life and times of Mama Adelaide Tambo.
Mama Tambo would have turned 90 years old this year.
Each October, which is Tambo’s birthday month, the metro remembers the immense contribution of the anti-apartheid stalwart.
The City of Ekurhuleni conferred OR Tambo with the Freedom of the City in 2004 posthumously.
To kick-start the month-long programme, the 2019 OR Tambo Learners’ Debate will be applying a United Nations (UN) negotiations format.
This format, also known as Model UN, is an educational simulation and academic activity in which learners learn about diplomacy, international relations, world problems and possible solutions.

The debate will be hosted, in collaboration with the OR Tambo District Municipality, Alfred Nzo District Municipality, City of Lusaka in Zambia and the Gauteng Department of Education, on October 13 at the Alberton Civic Centre in Alwyn Taljaard Avenue in Alberton.
It will start at 8am.
“It is important to instil the values of our forefathers in the minds of our future leaders at an early age.
“As such, we are convening the debate sessions to allow learners to relate to how former leaders negotiated and resolved world matters,” said MMC for Community Services Clr Nomadlozi Nkosi.
“However, sessions will encourage young minds to tackle issues affecting them today.”
At the end of debate session, learners will hand over their resolutions to the executive mayor, Clr Mzwandile Masina.
