Foreign shopkeepers must comply with by-laws

Local small businesses are expected to register and comply, yet most of the spaza shop operators are not compliant, neither do they pay taxes like the rest of us are expected to.

What makes matters worse is the food they sell in their unhygienic shops is also not monitored by local health inspectors.

This cannot be acceptable because local business people view this biased treatment of illegal business operators as unfair. Not only do illegal businesses violate the country’s business ethics and procedures, but they are also violating health and municipal by-laws.

 Criminals targeting foreign shop owners

The Ekurhuleni metro must embark on a campaign to enforce municipal by-laws as well as health by-laws to bring these businesses in line with municipal compliance. Unless action is taken, we will continue to have these problems and hatred between locals and foreigners.
