The Sweethearts Foundation, based in Randburg, handed over three bespoke wheelchairs, each fitted to the beneficiaries’ requirements, at Somalia Park informal settlement in Vosloorus on July 27.

The organisation provides wheelchairs to those in need through their Tops and Tags Initiative, where plastic bottles are recycled in exchange for wheelchairs. Generous donations maximise their impact and allow children to receive customised wheelchairs.

On the day, the donation was made possible due to a very generous donation of money from Nginza Horner Attorneys.

Jessica Gordons, the founder of the organisation, said they first heard about the beneficiaries after one of their own, Ncumisa Sam, volunteered at the settlement recently.

“Sam was here to help provide food parcels to the families when she was made aware of the beneficiaries, Thulisile Mpofu (10), Anele Majova (13) and Bongiwe Nombula (17), and their wheelchair needs,” said Gordons.

Mpofu, who has been disabled since birth, is being looked after by her mother who is also disabled, while both Nombula and Majova are being looked after by their unemployed mothers.

Gordons said by the time they reached the children’s names on their waiting list and tried to contact Sam, they found out that she had sadly passed and they were heartbroken that she would not know the huge impact of her being able to assist in obtaining the wheelchairs for the children.

“The handover on the day was done in honour of Sam’s charity work and we were so pleased that we did something to fulfil her wish to help them,” Gordons said.

The handover was facilitated by JHB Mini Council. They arranged for cupcakes, cold drinks and decorations to make the day a success.
