Consol fixes orphanage

“Money is not important, what is important is that we enjoyed spending the day with the little ones and doing something special for them,” Makola said.

Consol Glass, a glass-manufacturing company in Wadeville, staff members dedicated their weekend fixing Dzulani Children Care Centre on May 11 and 12.

Dzulani Children Care Centre is an orphanage in Dindela Section, Vosloorus, and has been in need of financial support for many years.

The Consol staff fixed parts of the centre, including rewiring the centre’s electricity, changing kitchen and bathroom doors, changing ceiling boards, putting running water inside the centre’s kitchen and painting the centre’s walls.

Consol also bought two large electric stoves, a 17kg washing machine and brought food for the children of the centre.

According to Koketso Makola, the company’s human resource business partner, the company spent last year’s 67 minutes for Mandela doing something special for children.

“During the day we identified the centre’s needs and promised to come back and fix them. That is why our staff members dedicated their weekend at the centre on the weekend,” said Makola.

During Mandela Day (July 18) last year, Consol bought blankets and enjoyed a braai for the orphans to make them feel special.

A humble Makola told Kathorus MAIL the work they had done on the weekend at the centre cost the company a lot of money, but could not be drawn into stating the figures.

“The founder of the centre, Nelly Nelukau, is one special person who is doing something good for children and I wish more companies can dedicate their time doing something good for this centre.”

Makola thanked the Consol staff members for dedicating their time and their skills in fixing all that is broken at the centre.

Nelukau said she can’t thank Consol enough for what they did for her children on the day.

She also said the orphanage has since been surviving by the grace of private donors.

“I can’t thank Consol and all the other donors enough for what they did for my children, especially after failing to get financial support from the Department of Social Development,” said Nelukau.
