Speedsters nabbed over Easter weekend on the East Rand

A pastor also landed in hot water as he apparently sped to a service meeting.

The EMPD High Speed Unit members were out in full force from Friday, April 19 to Sunday,  April 21, targeting speedsters on both the N3 and N12 freeway hot-spots.

Chief superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesperson, said 25 drivers ended behind bars for excessive speeding.

“Seven drivers aged between 21 and 56 were apprehended on Friday between 10am and 4pm on N12 eastbound by the R59 bridge when caught doing speeds of 198, 188, 188, 176, 173, 170 and 161km/h on this 120km/h zone,” said Kgasago.

“They were all men, including a pastor who claimed he was late for a service and a SBV technician advancing the reason that he was rushing to fix an ATM.”

He said on Saturday between 6am and 10am on N12 eastbound by the Atlas turn-off, which has the speed limit of 120km/h, two speedsters – a woman and a man aged 26 and 27 – ended behind bars for clocking 188 and 166km/h respectively.

The pair was detained at Boksburg North police station.

“Also on Saturday, on the R21 southbound between  North Rand and N12 bridge which is an 80km/h zone, five drivers were nabbed for excessive speeding between 10am and 12h30 caught doing speeds of 140, 134, 123, 120 and 114km/h.

“The arrested drivers were all males between the ages of 22 and 42 claiming that they were late for work. After being charged for reckless and negligent driving at Boksburg North they were released on R1 000 bail each.

“On Sunday, five drivers were arrested on the N3 between Geldenhuys Interchange and Rand Airport turn-off which is a 120km/h zone.”

Six more speedsters were also arrested on Sunday on the N12 west and eastbound between Sam Green Bridge Road and Edenvale turnoff which is a 120km/h zone.
