Foundation collect sanitary pads for girl-children

Co-founder of the organisation Fanie Banda said the aim of the event was to influence positive change in the community by running programmes that would be beneficial to the community.

An initiative to keep girl-children at school was hosted by Egagasini Children and Youth Foundation at the Sam Ntuli Sports Complex in Thokoza.

The event began at 6.30am on Human Rights Day, March 21, and ran for four days until March 24.

Shifting Pads, as the initiative is affectionately known, saw people from the township entertained and treated to different sport categories including cycling, fun walk, run, volleyball, cricket, netball and soccer.

There were also extra activities such as wellness station, aerobics, food garden, kiddie’s playground, chess, indigenous games as well as play station games.

“We held this event in line with Human Rights Day because we wanted to emphasise that girl-children ought to be at school and be treated with dignity no matter what their background situation might be. We have noticed that most of girl-children miss school during their menstruation cycle just because parents cannot afford to buy them sanitary towels,” said Fanie.

Fanie said they want to put a stop to this.

The initiative started last year with the organisation collecting about 500 sanitary pads that were donated to three primary schools in Katlehong – Khehlekile, Mzamo and Qhoqhoyine.

This year the organisation aims to collect about 500 reusable and disposable sanitary towels for each school in the area. These will be donated to Grade Eight and Grade Seven learners.
