Hardworking detective makes successful arrest

Manuel was sentenced to 15 years for murder and three months for assault common. The court also found him unfit to possess a firearm.

Det Const Skhumbuzo Mbatha, based at Vosloorus Police Station, made a successful arrest in December 2017 and got a heavy conviction as a result in March as a result of his hard work.

Mbatha said the crime was committed at 7.57pm on December 1, 2017, at a house in Othongathi, Extension 14 in Vosloorus.

He explained how the crime was committed and how he arrested the suspect. He said two African males went to collect their money at the said house. On arrival, the mother, who owed the guys money, came out with her son, Thokozani Sibiya (20), to attend to the two guys.

Mbatha said an argument broke out between Sibiya and the two guys. As a result, Sibiya was stabbed in the upper body by Lebohang Manuel (18), one of the two males. He was rushed to the nearby J Dumane Clinic, where he was certified dead immediately on arrival.

The case was reported and assigned to Mbatha for investigation. Manuel was arrested on the same day and charged with murder and assault common.

He appeared in the Boksburg Regional Court on December 4, 2017, to face his charges and has been attending trial until he was found guilty in the Vosloorus Magistrate’s Court on March 20.

Mbatha said he was very excited about the sentencing because it will serve as an eye-opener to all those who think of committing a similar crime.

“These youngsters need to be taught a lesson because they think stabbing is a solution if you don’t get what you want,” said Mbatha.

Communications officer at Vosloorus Police Station Capt Piet Rossouw said assault and assault common crimes are reported a lot to the police station.

“Most of these crimes occur as a result of liquor usage. Even though in this case it has nothing to do with liquor, I believe the heavy sentence received by the accused will send a strong message to many people who think of using weapons to seek revenge,” explains Rossouw.
