Uber drivers targeted by hijackers

Police stations in Kathorus have issued a warning to Uber drivers and passengers to observe safety precautions following a series of reported crimes involving the hijacking of Uber taxis.

According to a police media statement issued by the Kathorus SAPS Cluster’s spokesperson Capt Mega Ndobe, criminals hire Uber taxis and then give a driver a fictitious address in Katlehong, Thokoza or Vosloorus. On arrival at the destination, the Uber driver is then robbed at gunpoint and forced to surrender the vehicle.

Ndobe told Kathorus MAIL several such incidents have been reported to the police at all three police precincts. However, he said, no arrests have been made.

Ndobe has assured the public the detectives were working around the clock to arrest those involved.

Although the police could not confirm or identify the criminal syndicate, Ndobe said several incidents have been reported to the police on a few times.

Ndobe has advised Uber drivers and users to drive to a local police station to request for a police escort to their destination. “This is simply to ensure the safety of both the Uber driver and their passengers. As the police, we are there to ensure the safety of every person who needs our protection,” Ndobe explained.
