Older citizens treated to early Christmas party

Elderly members of Methodist Church in Southern Africa (MCSA) on the East Rand, joined by other township older persons, celebrated their Christmas party earlier than usual.

The celebration took place at the Methodist Church in Vosloorus on November 28.

More than 60 elderly people attended the celebration.

Christian Citizenship secretary Debra Mokae said the purpose of the celebration was to affirm the role the elderly people played in the life of the church and also to make them feel special.

“We want them to remember the day when they were young. They contributed a lot to make the church what it is today. We want them to know that they are still an important part of the church,” said Mokae.

She thanked Lisolethu James, the owner of Notos Company, for sponsoring the event.

“This is the fifth instalment of the event, and James has been part of it ever since its inception,” recalls Mokae.

“I thought I would sponsor it for the last time last year, but after my husband died last year I felt it would be unfair to drop them since it was his last wish to see elderly people happy,” said James.

She said she and her late husband knew it was not always easy for some older people to come to church.

“Others do not even have a person to wish them a happy Christmas. Other have no food on Christmas Day. So we came up with this idea of doing something special for them,” said James.

Elderly people were treated to lunch and received gifts.

They were also treated to a word of God by the Reverend Mlungisi Zwane.

During his reflections, Zwane emphasised the importance of looking after elderly people.
