Cyclists gear up for annual race

Be sure you enter the 35th annual City Macsteel National Classic taking place on October 27 and 28.

Calling all cycling enthusiasts to enter the Carnival City Macsteel National Classic Cycle Race.

The 35th annual event, organised by the Rotary Club of Germiston and the Germiston Wheelers Cycling Club, which attracts thousands of entries every year, will be held on October 28 and 29.

This ever-popular race will follow the same format as in previous years, starting with the mountain bike race being held on the Saturday and the road race on the Sunday.

The road race will run simultaneously with the trail run, that organisers introduced last year, and due to popularity have decided to continue.

The Carnival City Macsteel National Classic Cycle Race is recognised as one of the most popular and prestigious events on South Africa’s road cycle racing calendar in Gauteng.

The main objectives of the race are to raise funds for Germiston Rotary’s community projects, the Rotary Foundation and Germiston Wheelers’ charity projects, as well as to develop amateur cycling.

Charities and causes that have previously benefited from the race include Elandsvallei Home for the Aged, Epworth Children’s Village, SAVF Die Anker Tehuis, Germiston SPCA and Amcare with a number of wheelchairs being donated throughout Ekurhuleni.

The mountain bike race, which will start at 7am, will be broken into the following categories: a 60km race, a 35km race, a 6km to 12km race for riders younger than 12 years old and a 1km to 3km race for riders younger than eight years old.

The road race, which will start at 6am, will include 110km and 58km distances and will be broken into several categories: elite and u-23 men, junior men, veteran men (VA/VB/VC), elite and veteran women, u-17 and u-15 boys, u-17 and u-15 girls, tandem men, tandem mixed, tandem social, para-cyclists and open categories.

The trail run, which will start at 7am, will include a 5km, 10km and 21km trail along the MTB route.

Interested parties can get more information and enter the races at either www.germistonclassic.co.za or www.racetec.co.za, with entries closing on October 10, at 11pm.

Information on road closures is still to be released.
