Three security guards employed at a butchery outlet at Xaba Street in Thokoza were arrested at their workstation on Tuesday, August 21.

Thokoza SAP communication officer Capt Buyisile Mvelase confirmed the arrests. She said the sector manager, crime intelligence in Germiston and Ekurhuleni Metro Public Order Policing task team, have been working on the information that led them to the butchery at Xaba Street in Thokoza.

“On their arrival at the butchery, they ordered the security guards to their guard room and searched them. They were found to be in possession of three unlicensed firearms – a 38 special firearm, a silver Norinco 9mm and other special firearms,” said Mvelase.

Mvelase said all three security guards, all in their 30s, have been detained at Thokoza SAPS.

“The police immediately started their investigation, and have been questioning the suspects.

“One of the suspects is due to appear in court. He told the police they had been promised jobs as security guards and would be given firearms.

“The suspect said they did not know that the firearms were unlicensed,” Mvelase said.

The investigations are continuing.

The suspects will appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court to face charges of being in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
