Wrapping up Child Awareness Month in style

Gauteng Department of Health wrapped up Child Protection Month by conducting a march to raise awareness against children abuse on June 22 in Katlehong.

The march started at 9am at Ramokonopi Clinic via Sontonga Road to Khumalo Clinic.

Children from seven different pre-schools from around Katlehong attended in their numbers.

Those pre-schools are Bambanani, Ratanang, Themba Phungula, Mbalenhle and Usizo crèches, as well as Sikhulisiwe and Thuthukani day care centres. These pre-schools are from Ramokonopi, Siluma Gardens and Khumalo Sections.

One of the organisers, Tlaleng Dlamini from the Department of Health, said they are trying their best to combat the abuse and killing of children.

“We are tired of the unnecessary killing of innocent children. We have decided to come up with a march to fight this act,” said Dlamini.

She said when they arrived at Khumalo Clinic, one of the speakers – Larato Shekeshe from EMPD will teach these children about how to avoid and report abuse.

“These children are abused because they don’t even know what abuse is. They only realise once it has happened. So the speaker will teach them about all different types of abuse,” said Dlamini.

Community members, teachers from different pre-schools, as well as workers from the Department of Health were treated with sporting activities played by the school children.

Bokamoso Malebane (6) recited a poem about children abuse while Tlokiso Sekele (6) delivered a touching speech about rape.
