Golfers donate 1.3 tons of dog food to the local SPCA

Food is collected during the Boertjies vs Souties charity golf day.

Boksburg golfers donated 1.3 tons of dog food, as well as a variety of tinned food, to the Boksburg SPCA on May 26.

A few years ago, Barry Dex and his 27 friends decided to host a golf tournament among themselves to raise money for charity.

This year is their fourth edition to host the Boertjies vs Souties golf day.

One of the team members, Shaun Keet, said: “Each of the 28 players that play each year makes it their mission to get as much dog food as possible for this good cause. Last year we managed to collect over two tons of dog food for the SPCA through sponsors and personal contributions.”

Dex said next year they aim to exceed this year’s target.

“All of this would not have been possible without our sponsors and everybody that contributed.

“We thank East Rand Fuel, QI Logistics, Quad Africa Consulting, Kintetsu World Express, Thembelihle, EPS transport, Chryso group and Martin and Martin for their wonderful contributions,” he said.

The participants of the Boertjies vs Souties golf day held annually to raise funds for charity.

Maggie Mudd, Boksburg SPCA manager, said they are so thrilled to receive the donation of wet and dry dog food.

“The Boksburg SPCA are finding that the number of animals being donated to the society is rising and that this is generally due to pet owners no longer being able to afford to care for their pets.

“Owners are being retrenched or are simply out of work and cannot afford the added expense that owning a pet causes.

“The increase of animals equals to more food being used on a daily basis so we are always extremely grateful when food is donated to the SPCA.

“We send our sincere appreciation to the golf group for choosing the Boksburg SPCA with this extremely thoughtful and generous donation,” Mudd said.
