Residents of Ncala Section are back on the streets

Residents of Ncala Section in Katlehong took their anger to the streets of Katlehong on May 9 in protest of Eskom officials who switched off the township’s electricity on May 6.

Communications officer at Katlehong SAPS Capt Mega Ndobe said: “Residents immediately barricaded the roads with stones, bricks and dug some holes in some of the roads, including Kgotso, Thutong and Masakhane roads and streets entering the Ncala and Twala sections.”

During the protest, company vehicles were mostly targeted.

“That afternoon, protesters threw stones at a Telkom truck and a light motor vehicle was burnt to ashes. A protester was shot by a Telkom security guard while trying to attack the Telkom truck. He was taken to hospital and is recovering well and is in a stable condition,” said Ndobe.

He added that the Ekurhuleni Metro Police were at the scene to monitor the situation.

“No cars were allowed to pass the mentioned roads as the protesters would come out and attack both the vehicles and the drivers,” Ndobe added.

Two cases of malicious damage to property and attempted murder were opened by the Katlehong North police.
