Ten rob Fruit and Veg City in Vosloorus

The Fruit and Veg City in the Chris Hani Shopping Centre in Vosloorus was robbed by 10 suspects at about 5.30pm on April 20.

Communications official at the Vosloorus Police Station, Capt Piet Rossouw, said it is alleged that 10 armed suspects entered the shop and helped themselves to cash at the till points.

“Two of the suspects went upstairs to the office and pointed at the manager with firearms. One of the suspects took a cell phone from the table and demanded money and threatened to shoot him if he fails to co-operate. He told them that the money is downstairs. They ordered him to go downstairs with them. On their way downstairs, they heard a gunshot. He then ran back to his office and the two suspects ran away. He waited about five minutes in his office and then went downstairs. He realised that the shop was quiet and the staff members were already standing at the shop entrance shocked,” said Rossouw.

He added that the shopping centre security guard, in partnership with two SAPS officers, confronted two suspects who were trying to run away and arrested them.

“The other suspects managed to get away with an undisclosed amount of money taken from the till points and the cell phone taken from the manager’s office. The two arrested suspects, aged 30 and 38, are from Dube Hostel in Soweto. An unlicensed firearm and ammunition were confiscated with the serial number being filed off. The firearm was found in possession of one of the arrested suspects,” said Rossouw

Rossouw added that one of the suspects claimed that he had been released from prison in January for a business robbery in Meadowlands.

Suspects are being detained at the Vosloorus Police Station for further investigation and will appear in the Vosloorus Magistrate’s Court soon.
