The communications officer at Katlehong Police Station, Const Sivenkosi Mtwa said the dialogue focused mainly on issues such as why men abuse women and vice versa.
“Husbands and wives, as well as boyfriends and girlfriends, spoke freely about issues that affect them,” said Mtwa.
He said the fruitful ideas and solutions were shared on the day. “It was a fun experience for the couples who used the platform to speak freely without any fear,” said Mtwa.
Mtwa said that normally people, especially females, are afraid to speak about issues that affect them at home. “They are afraid to speak openly as they are afraid of their abusive partners, so they used this platform in a form of dialogue,” said Mtwa.
The Department of Community Safety even suggested having a second round of the event. The suggestion was welcomed by all the community members who attended.
What became clear during this event is that both men and women are victims of abuse. It is just that they are afraid to speak out.
Katlehong acting station commander Col Nomthandeki Mthembu thanked everyone who participated in the dialogue. “People must come in their numbers to the next event but its date is yet to be set,” said Mthembu.
She pleaded with the couples to speak out about issues that affect their love life. Issues can result in killings if they are not spoken out. “Community members must report to the police if they notice that there is domestic violence happening at their neighbours’ places,” said Mthambu.
