Elspark FC juniors shine in league

Elspark Football Club (EFC) players displayed excellent football in the Eastern League Cup campaign.

EFC has five teams, u-11, u-13, u-15, u-17 and the senior team, which participate in different leagues.

The u-11, u-13 and the senior teams play under the Eastern League, while the u-15 and u-17 teams play under the Safa Ekurhuleni League.

Shepherd Nkosi, the coach of both the u-11 and u-13 teams, said he was excited about the potential shown by his u-11 side.

“They only started this year and there are only 16 players in that team. Only four of them are 11 years old. The rest are juniors, starting from the age of six to 10,” said Nkosi.

He said in their first season playing together, they played a total of 22 games in the league and won 11, drew five and lost six. They ended at number five in the league.

“That is a good record for a team that was playing their first season together,” he said.

As the team finished in the top five, they had to participate in the Eastern League Cup, where they put on an astonishing performance.

Nkosi said his team (u-11) played six games in the Eastern League Cup and won all of them.

“In the semi-finals we played against Old Eds Primary and drew 1-1. We won the game by 4-2 on penalties, with Vuyo Mgadu becoming our hero by saving two penalties,” the proud coach told Kathorus MAIL.

He said during the finals recently, Mgadu (9) saved another penalty that led to a 5-4 win after a 1-1 draw in regular time.

Mgadu was awarded for his excellent work and was crowned Player of the Tournament.

The team was awarded a runner-up prize – a trophy and gold medals.
