Firefighters leap into action to save building

Firefighters from the City of Ekurhuleni saved a massive unoccupied thatched-roof structure from burning to the ground on Thursday, November 9.

The firefighters came from the Bedfordview, Edenvale and Primrose fire stations.

William Ntladi, the district manager media liaison for Emergency Management Services, said they received a call around 11.32am.

“The firefighters responded immediately and rushed to 27 Boeing Road West, Morninghill.

“On arrival, the crews found a massive thatched-roof structure in flames. The firefighters went to work immediately and the fire was brought under control,” said Ntladi.

He said the crews created firebreaks to prevent the flames from spreading to the rest of the building and other structures in the neighbourhood and endangering residents.

“No casualties were recorded on scene as a result of the fire. The actual cause of the fire is undetermined and still under investigation,” Ntladi said.

He said preliminary investigations show that wooden remnants close to the building were set alight by an unknown person.

“The strong wind forced the fire to spread to the roof and caused it to burn vigorously,” said Ntladi.
