A new kid on the block

Leonard “Lenny Da Kid” Maliti is an up-and-coming hip-hop artist from Katlehong.

Born on September 25, 1992 in Katlehong 1, East of Johannesburg, the 24-year-old lyrical phenomenon is winning the hearts and ears of South Africans with his storytelling and brilliant delivery.

Lenny said he is a lyricist, freestyler, poet and entertainer.

“I fell in love with music when I first heard one of DMX’s records Slippin from Flesh On My Flesh when I was six years old. By that time I was doing music with my brother,” said Lenny.

He said his hip-hop journey started in Pretoria where he grew up.

“I then took my talent to my hometown, Katlehong where I learned the art of merging rap with poetry – a skill I obtained at high school,” he said.

His first studio session in 2015 saw him record Haunted in a week.

“A year later I worked on another project Knock At The Door with local producers. The same year I began to see the light when I met Kwesta during a recording session,” said Lenny.

He said he has performed for crowds in the most prominent areas of the East Rand.

“I have shared the stage with TLT Amazing of Raplyf. As a result, my music knowledge grew rapidly and took shape. I have become passionate about my town and the part it plays as inspiration to my craft,” said Lenny.

In one of his great singles, Lenny pays homage to former TKzee member, Kabelo Mabalane. ‘Buga’ from the highly anticipated mixtape Lost n’ Found, was released on the August 14 this year under the record label and management of Abantumuzik.

The talented trendsetter has also founded a lifestyle brand called ‘Haunted Wear’ which promotes street fashion among other products.

He said he has done collaborations with artists like Makwa6eats and KidX.

KidX, one of the artists that Lenny has shared the stage with, said Lenny is one of the most rare talents Kathorus has ever produced.

“Lenny has shared the stage with many other local artists and he has proven to be a force to be reckoned with. He has shown no signs of slowing down as he consumes the industry in every verse of poetry he serves,” said KidX.
