Muso releases new single
Her music integrates a wide variety of styles, including Afrosoul, R&B and jazz.
Multi-talented musician Philisiwe Mavukela has released her exciting second single titled Ubuhle Bendalo, in a move which is bound to entice her local fans.
Mavukela (27) was born in 1989 in Katlehong and developed a love for music at a young age.
Now she is a singer, songwriter and performer. She is well known for her eclectic work, flamboyant stage presence and wide vocal range.
Her music integrates a wide variety of styles, including Afrosoul, R&B and jazz.
Mavukela told Kathorus MAIL how her music journey started.
“I started singing for the school choir at Cathula Primary School. After that I went to Fumana Secondary School, and I also sang in the school choir there. Then I attended Zibeleni Secondary School where my voice training teacher did some voice coaching via opera music,” said Mavukela.
Her love of music continued to develop, and she registered for a formal training course at the National School of Arts (NCA).
“After completing my formal music training in 2009, I began to teach myself to play a variety of musical instruments. Thereafter I started to write my own songs,” she said.
Mavukela also spent much time playing at local entertainment venues around Johannesburg and the surrounding areas.
“In 2016 I teamed up with Unsigned Prime Entertainment (Indie Record) and released my debut single titled Indlela in 2016, which is available as a free download on SoundCloud. The single engendered interest from my fans,” explained Mavukela.
According to Thokozani Dlamini, who is the artist’s manager, Mavukela’s Ubuhle Bendalo “has been made available on iTunes since the beginning of February. Both her singles Indlela and Ubuhle Bendalo are frequently played in various radio stations and receive great reviews from DJs and listeners,” said Dlamini.
Mavukela’s performances continue to draw interest and increase the buzz around her, says Dlamini.
“She has progressed rapidly – in December 2016 she shared the stage with Afrosoul divas such as Zonke, Lira and Zahara at The Reconciliation Festival in Carnival City.”
