Illegal hawkers in Thokoza and Katlehong opted to run for their lives and leave their stock behind when the metro police pounced on them during the special Bumper to Bumper operation on Friday July 22, between 2pm and 10pm.

The metro police concentrated on the problematic Kgotso, Hospital and Khumalo Streets.

According to the EMPD spokesperson Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago, the following were confiscated: 200 counterfeit DVDs, 80 backpacks, 85 CDs, 13 floor carpets, 100 handbags, 12 winter jackets, a big box full of whiteners and detergents, six small paraffin stoves and 50 pairs of ladies’ lingerie.

“Another 20 pairs of socks, 11 advertising boards/signs, different types of rat poison, boxes of plastic ware, refuse bags and perishables such as fruits and vegetables were also seized by the metro police,” said Kgasago.

The EMPD spokesperson also said that all the seized goods were stored at the EMPD Vosloorus By-Laws offices and can be released on payment of a R200 fine. Counterfeit goods cannot be reclaimed and the highly perishable goods are discarded after 40 hours.
