Taverns raided in Thokoza

The EMPD has vowed to identify and intensify the operating that will target all the taverns whose owners deliberately disregard the law by operating without a valid permit.

The EMPD’s operation Bumper to Bumper swooped on Thokoza on Friday, June 17 and targeted taverns operating illegally in the area.

Three taverns were raided between 3pm and midnight where four illegal operators were arrested and liquor estimated to the value of R700 000 was confiscated. The seized alcohol from the three illegally operated taverns consisted of 750ml beers, 440ml ciders and a large variety of spirits.

Four operators from three illegally operated taverns were arrested, including a 49-year-old male who was arrested at Lesedi Lounge, a 27-year-old old male at the Nkosi Tavern and a 39-year-old female with a 49-year-old male were both arrested at the Backstage Tavern.

The suspects were detained at the Thokoza police station where they were charged with operating a liquor outlet without an operating permit. They appeared at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 20 June.
