Man electrocuted while allegedly stealing high voltage cables

A man was fatally electrocuted by high voltage power lines at Germiston Lake train station.

The City’s Disaster and Emergency rescue team from Germiston Central Fire Station received information about the incident and swiftly responded to the scene for intervention.

“On arrival, the motionless body of an adult male was hanging from high voltage electrical cables above the railway lines. A cutting tool was found between the rail lines below the dead body,” said William Ntladi of the Emergency Services.

“The power had to be isolated before the charred body could be brought to the ground. The man was declared deceased on scene by paramedics.”

It is alleged the man was attempting to cut the 3 000-volt electrical overhead power cables. After retrieving the body, the crew handed the matter over to the police for further investigation and removal to a state mortuary.

According to Ntladi, this was the second similar incident in a week’s time. The same rescue team had to recover the charred body of a man hanging from the power lines at India train station in Germiston recently.
