Community member assists in arrest of alleged armed robber

Primrose police apprehended a suspect on a charge of armed robbery with a weapon other than a firearm.

While walking home from school last Monday, two learners were approached by two men in Main Reef Road.

“The men reportedly demanded that the girls hand over their cellphones,” explained Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

“While the suspects searched one of the learners, the other was able to escape and ran to some nearby flats.”

The learner who escaped alerted her father and he chased after the suspects.

“The girl’s father cornered one of the suspects and handed him over to the Primrose police, unharmed,” said Maome.

“The learner’s school bag, cellphone and R50, which was taken during the alleged robbery, were handed back to her.”

The 18-year-old suspect was arrested on a charge of armed robbery with a weapon other than a firearm.

Police are searching for the remaining suspect.

“We thank the community member who assisted in the arrest,” said Maome.

The suspect has since appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court, where his case was postponed for plea and trial.
